Commuters who rely on NJ Transit might see major delays over the next few days as the transit system reports maintenance issues caused by this week’s heatwave.

On Tuesday, riders were warned of delays that could potentially affect travel for the next 48 to 72 hours.

“We are experiencing heat-related rail equipment issues to the air conditioning/electronic components due to the extreme & excess temps,” read a message on the NJ Transit site.

It’s the latest in a summer of transportation meltdowns partially caused by unrelenting heat waves and sweltering temperatures in the area. Last week, NJ Transit halted its coastline service after one of its drawbridges remained stuck open, stalling travel for hours. Other commuters spent hours stranded at Penn Station due back-to-back days of delays afflicting NJ Transit and Amtrak last month.

The heads of NJ Transit and Amtrak both vowed to increase inspections going forward. But climate and urban planning experts warn that transportation meltdowns will continue as the temperatures continue to climb this summer — and in the years to follow.

On Tuesday, NJ Transit said its crew was “working around the clock to make the necessary repairs and restore affected equipment to revenue service as quickly as possible.”

NJ Transit did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
