NASA says a meteor was likely responsible for a situation late Tuesday morning that alarmed people across New York City and New Jersey.

A fireball was spotted in the sky just after 11 a.m. and some people also felt a shaking sensation. NASA says it passed over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan. It says no meteorites were produced by this event.

There were also reports of military activity in the area around the same time.
