A meteor was spotted shooting over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating approximately 30 miles above Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday morning, according to NASA.

The celestial object made its way through the atmosphere over New York around 11:15am, at the same time New Yorkers reported seeing a fiery streak dart across the sky as well as a slight tremor beneath their feet .

Reports of the fireball gliding across the sky came in from twenty individuals across New York, New Jersey , and Connecticut . One observer even described the shooting star as glowing green, yellow, and white.

The fast-moving spectacle lasted for about 30 seconds before breaking into three fragments, according to an eyewitness account submitted to the American Meteor Society.

The "daylight fireball," as it was dubbed by NASA's Meteor Watch, first appeared approximately 40 miles above New York Harbor's Upper Bay, where the Statue of Liberty is located.

Travelling at a speed of 38,000 miles per hour, "the meteor descended at a steep angle of just 18 degrees from vertical, passing over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan ," stated NASA.

The event did not result in any meteorites - debris from outer space that strikes the Earth's surface. There were no reports of damages or injuries related to the event, confirmed by the city's Office of Emergency Management.

As for the reported tremors, experts do not believe they were connected to the meteor or any other natural event. The US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center has dismissed the possibility of an earthquake being the cause behind reported tremors in northeast New Jersey and Staten Island, New York .

Their investigation found no seismic data indicating a quake had occurred. In a statement, they said: "An examination of the seismic data in the area showed no evidence of an earthquake .

"The USGS has no direct evidence of the source of the shaking. Past reports of shaking with no associated seismic signal have had atmospheric origins such as sonic booms or weather -related phenomena."

Meanwhile, NASA suspects the tremors were connected with recent military operations in the area. Tremor reports coincide with a rare heatwave hitting New York on Tuesday, where temperatures soared to 100 degrees.
