Robb Recommends: The Eucalyptus Bedding Designed to Keep You Cool All Summer

Welcome to Robb Recommends , a regular series in which our editors and contributors endorse something they’ve tried and loved—and think will change your life for the better. If you purchase a product or service through a link in this story, we may receive a small commission.

One unfortunate truth of our warming planet is that at the height of summer, there’s no amount of air conditioning that can stop hot sleepers from getting, well, hot.

And while there’s a variety of technology on the market designed to address this group, to which my partner and I belong, a lot of it seems somewhat overweening—and doesn’t really work. In other words, the fact that there are some companies spinning sheets out of volcanic rock is impressive—until you sweat through said sheets anyway.

In search of a solution for this muggiest time of year, the great minds at Sijo Home went back to the earth and developed a range of products made from eucalyptus fibers. The company’s AiryWeight line lives up to its name with a cozy yet cooling duvet, as well as sheets with the smooth hand of silk.

I’ve been testing these products for the past two months, during some of the worst heat waves New York City has seen in recent memory. Temperatures have regularly reached into the mid-90s during this period, with sweltering periods of 100 percent relative humidity. I’d previously been trying out a (considerably more expensive) set of Sea Island cotton sheets, which felt lovely, but which didn’t combat the amount of moisture in the air here.

By comparison, the AiryWeight sheets felt like slipping into a cool bath. They’re supremely soft, and have stayed cool even during the worst of the heat waves the area has experienced so far. Sijo Home achieves this by spinning eucalyptus fibers into Tencell, which is both moisture-wicking and bacteria-resistant. This makes it especially good for people with sensitive skin, like my partner, but I’d venture most anyone would appreciate how it feels to the touch. Unless you’re a stalwart devotee of very, very crisp, hotel-style percale sheets, you’d probably like these.

This also applies to the line’s duvet, which is filled with lofty piles of eucalyptus fiber. What I like about it is that it gives you the sensation of weight without the warmth of a down or down-alternative comforter. It eased the transition from spring to summer, and now that I’ve been sleeping under it for a while, I might just keep it on my bed until fall arrives.

One caveat, though, is that eucalyptus fibers shed like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I’m still finding balls of navy-blue lint on the floors in my bedroom. They’re easy enough to vacuum up, but it’s a not insignificant disadvantage. Still, I’d rather deal with that than lose sleep.
