'Fireball' meteor soared over Statue of Liberty and disintegrated above New York as residents report shaking

NASA said a meteor soared over the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday morning before it disintegrated about 30 miles above Midtown Manhattan .

The space rock entered the atmosphere above NYC around 11:15 a.m., which coincides with resident accounts of witnessing a flash of fire streak across the sky as the ground subtly shook beneath their feet. The sky flame was reportedly witnessed by 20 people across New York , New Jersey and Connecticut—one said the shooting star shone bright green, yellow and white.

The luminescent spectacle was short-lived, lasting about 30 seconds before breaking off into three pieces, according to the witness who reported the sighting to the American Meteor Society.

The "daylight fireball," according to NASA's Meteor Watch, was first spotted about 40 miles above NYC Harbor's Upper Bay, which is where Lady Liberty resides.

"The meteor descended at a steep angle of just 18 degrees from vertical, passing over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan ,” while moving about 34,000 miles per hour, NASA wrote in a Facebook post. The fireball yielded no meteorites or debris from outer space that typically hits the Earth's surface.

Additionally, there were no reports of damages or injuries in connection with the meteor, said the city's Office of Emergency Management. The shaking, however, was believed to be unrelated to the space rock's passing.

The shaking wasn't the result of an earthquake either, according to the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center, which confirmed it had received numerous reports of shaking in the northeast New Jersey and Staten Island area. “An examination of the seismic data in the area showed no evidence of an earthquake,” the agency said in a statement.

“The USGS has no direct evidence of the source of the shaking. Past reports of shaking with no associated seismic signal have had atmospheric origins such as sonic booms or weather-related phenomena.” NASA speculated the trembling was in connection with other reports of military activity in the area.

The "daylight fireball" served as a brief distraction from the nearly-unbearable heat NYC locals faced Tuesday. The mercury was said to have reached 11 degrees, but it felt more like 110.

NASA scientists this week said they were studying a massive asteroid, bigger than the Eiffel Tower, that's on it's way toward Earth. The large space rock, named 99942 Apophis, will reach out planet in 2029 but won't make impact—just skim by. Officials from the European Space Agency said they plan to send a spacecraft to the asteroid to study its size, shape, mass and rotation through space.
