A funeral service was held on Thursday for an NYPD recruit who died just days before he was set to graduate. MORE:
Newest NYPD class graduates, Mayor Eric Adams reflect on death of fellow recruit The service, held at St. Anselm and Roch Church, was attended by hundreds of NYPD members, who came to pay their respects to Ordonez. They were also joined by Mayor Eric Adams, Police Commissioner Edward Caban, and other elected officials. Ordonez was just five days from graduating from the police academy when he died during a physical exertion training exercise on July 10. The NYPD recruit leaves behind 2-year-old twins, and many remember him as a family man with a deep passion to serve in New York City’s police force. “It's a tough day today for our blue family who mourns the loss of our brother, but also Edgar's family who lost a son, lost a father, a loved one,” said Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association. The medical examiner is still working to determine the official cause of death and there is no word on how this death will affect the future of police academy training. "
