Studiocanal is moving into the Big Apple.

The Paris-based production-distribution house will launch an office New York City, with Anne Chérel promoted to Chief Commercial Officer to oversee the base.

Studiocanal, which is in throws of making Paddington in Peru , already has an office in LA and a stake in Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s U.S.-based The Picture Company. The NYC office will focus on work with American distribution partners.

According to the Canal+-owned company, the plans form part of a strategy to “systematically” combine distribution and global sales of all of its film projects, working with third-party distributors. Besides the third Paddington movie, which is being released in partnership with Sony Pictures, Back to Black is being released with Focus Features, We Live in Time and Huntington with A24 and Wicked Little Letters with Sony Pictures Classics. “Advanced discussions” with an American partner around Paris Has Fallen are happening.

Chérel’s promotion, effective September 1, follows a spate of executive-level changes at Studiocanal that also include Dominique Jubin being named Head of French Drama at the French content house’s Canal+ Group cousin, Ciné+ OCS, former Netflix France exec Isabelle Pain joining as Head of Global Acquisitions & Analytics and Sara Reese Geffroy drafted in as SVP of the nascent Studiocanal Stories label and TV series development.

Chérel will report to Canal+ Group Deputy CEO and Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh. As well as the NYC office task, Chérel will remain overseeing all global distribution. Since 2020, she has been EP Global Sales & Distribution, overseeing international distribution of films such as Autumn and the Black Jaguar , Back to Black and Beating Hearts .

She first joined Canal+ in 2009 before joining the Studiocanal global sales division two years later.

Marsh said of Chérel: “Her in-depth knowledge of the global market is second to none, and her gift as a manager has allowed us to build a brilliant sales team of talented, dedicated experts. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Anne and wish her much success with developing Studiocanal’s distribution presence in the United States.”
