A longtime staple of 9th Avenue, Vintner Beer & Cheese shop (bw W46/47th St), is closing at the end of the month. The store’s entire inventory of products, from craft beers, to crackers, to beemster cheese, is on sale at 40% off.

“We have been a neighborhood store for many years, and would like to thank everyone for their patronage,” co-owner Dale Weiner told W42ST.

Since announcing the closure on Wednesday, “people have been coming in, saying they’re going to miss us, [saying] they loved it and the sandwiches were good” she added. “It’s a good place to sit and have a beer quietly without being in a bar.”

Dale and her husband Mitch opened the shop 15 years ago after customers arrived at their wine store down the street, Ninth Avenue Wine & Spirits, asking for beer. When a cheese shop closed down across the street they knew it was the right time to go into business.

The couple have lived in Hell’s Kitchen for more than 30 years, and raised their children in the neighborhood. Their wine shop will remain open, but is not licensed to sell beer or other products.

Rising prices for rent, insurance and more, combined with a slowdown in business since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, made it infeasible to keep the doors open, Mitch said. The shop relied heavily on traffic from office workers, who still have not returned in large numbers.

“We don’t know when they’re coming back, if they come back at all,” Mitch said. “If there’s nobody here to buy our sandwiches, we can’t survive.”

All sandwiches, and many other products including multiple varieties of pestos, roast beef and turkey, were homemade. Recently, the shop introduced a non-alcoholic beverages section.

The most popular sandwich was the Goodfella, made with prosciutto, ham, pepperoni, soppressata, red peppers and vinegar. A smaller selection of sandwiches is still available, while supplies last.

Many Hell’s Kitchen residents have sung Vintner Beer & Cheese’s praises throughout the years. “I love the beer selection, the sandwiches are delicious and really big (two people can share one),” artist Nicolae Rita told us in March. “It has a great understated vibe and decor, and feels very European.”

Everything must go by the end of the month. The tables that once beckoned customers to take a seat are now covered in products, with the basement’s inventory now upstairs.

Vintner Beer & Cheese is open through Wednesday, July 31st, from 1 to 10pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 8pm on Sundays.
