Mayor Eric Adams says new metal detectors able to scan subway riders for weapons will be rolled out by the end of the week.

"I'm really excited about this, just the potentiality that we could identify someone carrying a gun before they enter the system," Adams said.

The first detectors will be installed on Thursday or Friday at a handful of subway stations. It's not clear how many stations will be getting them or how many will be equipped with the new technology. However, the goal is to eventually expand the program systemwide.

"Eventually, every turnstile is going to be able to identify if someone is carrying a gun. I think it's a game changer for the transportation system across the globe. As always, New York is going to lead the way," Adams said.
