The future of Jacob Trouba has been the number one storyline for the New York Rangers this offseason.

Despite a number of trade rumors swirling around about Trouba, all signs are pointing in the direction that the captain will remain in New York.

“Unless he's traded before camp opens, Trouba will be with the New York Rangers and penciled in as a top-six defenseman, likely on the third pair with Zac Jones factoring in Braden Schneider on the second pair with K'Andre Miller and the top pair being Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren, who remains a restricted free agent,” Dan Rosen of NHL.com wrote. “If professionalism prevails, this won't be an issue for Trouba or the Rangers throughout the season.”

Trouba’s $8 million cap hit is not ideal for the Rangers, especially given the role that Rosen outlined that he could play on the third pairing alongside Zac Jones.

This past season, Trouba recorded three goals, 19 assists and 22 points in 69 games while averaging 21:15 minutes.

However, Trouba is the captain, so his individual game on the ice is not the only thing of importance when it comes to the value he provides.

The 30-year-old is a leader and that’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked when thinking about Trouba’s importance to the Rangers.

The goal for the Rangers is to win a Stanley Cup and Trouba should play a big role through their quest to try and accomplish that.
