NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A grandmother shot the mother of her grandson and then shot herself in the head on an Upper East Side street Friday morning in a suspected murder-suicide stemming from a custody battle, the NYPD said.

The deadly ambush shooting stunned residents of Yorkville, with the shooting scene just a half-block from the mayor's residence at Gracie Mansion.

Three shots rang out in front of 519 East 88th St. shortly before 9 a.m. as Marisa Galloway, 45, was loading her white Honda Civic on the street, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

Galloway, who lived nearby on East 86th Street, had placed her 1-year-old child in the backseat of the Honda and was in the process of loading a stroller into the trunk when Kathleen Leigh, 65, walked up and shot her twice, Kenny said.

Leigh shot Galloway once in the head and then shot her again in the back as she was lying on the ground, Kenny said. Leigh then shot herself once in the head, he said.

Galloway was pronounced dead at Weill Cornell Medical Center, while Leigh was pronounced dead at the scene.

Galloway's 1-year-old child remained in the backseat and was found physically unharmed by officers responding to multiple 911 calls. It appears the 4-year-old wasn't at the scene.

A loaded 9mm Glock was recovered on the sidewalk between the two women. A second gun was found in Leigh's tote bag, Kenny said.

The broad-daylight shooting was captured on surveillance video, according to police.

"Based on recovered video, we believe this incident was a murder-suicide," Kenny said at a news conference outside NYPD headquarters.

Kenny said Leigh is the grandmother of Galloway's 4-year-old son. The women had been involved in an ongoing custody dispute involving the child, he said.

The custody dispute had led to five domestic incident reports being filed with the NYPD, according to Kenny, who said none of those reports led to an arrest.

Leigh's address is listed as North Park Avenue in Chicago, though police believe she'd been living with family members in New York City for the past three years.

Leigh was a retired probation officer for Cook County, which is the county where Chicago is located. Police are investigating whether either firearm found at the scene was connected to her time in law enforcement.
