If walls could talk, this duplex loft apartment in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood would have some fascinating stories to share. The residence (units 5 and 6) at 131 West 24th Street, recently listed for $4.5 million, was once an after-party destination for A-listers partying at Studio 54.

Founded by Ian Schrager at the height of disco’s popularity in 1977, the legendary nightclub was frequented by celebs such as Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Michael Jackson , and David Bowie, to name a few. It stood as a symbol of extravagance, uninhibited partying, and incredible music, before closing in 1980 after just three years of operation.

Today, Studio 54 is known as 54 Below . Located in the basement of the building, the theatrical supper club is run by Broadway producers and dedicated to preserving the art of cabaret. Coincidentally, one of 54 Below’s owners is the Tony Award-winning producer selling the property at 131 West 24th Street.

    The library.

Spanning 4,200 square feet, the spacious duplex has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a lofted library, an industrial kitchen, a home office, and a home gym. It also features soaring 18-foot-high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The pad was constructed in 1901, and though it has been modernly updated and renovated, details like the original brick walls remain.

The main level hosts the primary bedroom, a yoga room/gym, a sprawling living room, a den, and two guest bedrooms. Heading up the staircase, the upper level is outfitted with a library that overlooks the living room below and two additional bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is currently used as an office, but can easily be transformed into a bedroom or hobby studio.

The kitchen, which is quite large for an N.Y.C. condo, showcases industrial-style steel appliances, terrazzo tiled floors, and wood cabinetry. Adjacent to the kitchen is a south-facing dining room bathed in more natural light.

The home is quite far from the Midtown Manhattan location of Studio 54, but it is steeped in disco history. Clubgoers would party at the abode after Studio 54 closed and rockstars and artists would also congregate at the nearby Chelsea Hotel. Groovy baby.

The property is listed by David Harris of Coldwell Banker Warburg.
