Stray storm possible overnight as severe weather exits Tri-State Area

Following in Friday's footsteps, Saturday afternoon produced another round of severe thunderstorms across the region.

We saw numerous reports of flash flooding, wind damage and even some hail. The storms were fueled in part by the stifling temperatures and tropical levels of humidity. Saturday's high of 93 in Central Park marks our fourth official heat wave of 2024.

The severe threat has mostly come to an end with a stray shower or storm possible in the overnight hours. Muggy conditions will remain, with lows in the low to mid 70s. Patchy fog is also possible.

Severe weather alerts and watches

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for Ocean County until 10 p.m.

A Flood Watch is in effect until midnight for all counties, except Nassau, Suffolk, Ulster and Dutchess, until midnight.

An Air Quality Alert is in effect for New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley and Fairfield County until 11 p.m.

Sunday forecast

For Sunday, conditions will start off dry, with another round of thunderstorms for the afternoon hours. Unlike Friday and Saturday however, the severe threat will be lower, with only a few isolated severe storms. The greatest hazard associated with these storms would be heavy rain.

Most of the day will feature mostly cloudy skies, which will keep high temperatures only in the mid 80s, and thus ending our heat wave. They will not end the high humidity, though.

A high risk of rip currents is in effect for all ocean beaches in New York, while the Jersey Shore will see a moderate risk.
