Ground stops issued at all three major airports in NYC, NJ

NEW YORK (PIX11) — All three major airports in New York City and New Jersey issued ground stops amid thunderstorms Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

LaGuardia Airport issued the ground stop at 2:10 p.m., followed by John F. Kennedy Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport at 2:15 p.m.

JFK and Newark airports lifted the ground stops as of Wednesday morning. LaGuardia Airport opened at 6 a.m., according to the FAA’s website .

Delays at all three airports diminished to less than 15 minutes, according to NYC Emergency Management . At least 1,300 flights were canceled and over 970 were delayed at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark.

New York City officials also issued flash flood and travel advisories . Thunderstorms and strong winds drenched the city Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning and severe thunderstorm warning for the Bronx and Manhattan through 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Forecasted weather conditions may cause flight disruptions at JFK Airport. Please check with your airline to determine the status of your flight,” representatives of JFK airport wrote on X .

Before the ground stop, delays had reached up to four hours at JFK and around two hours at LaGuardia and Newark, according to the FAA.
