  • How TV Is Making Room for Diversity Beyond the White Male Hero 'Who Lives by a Code'

Mike Hale, TV critic for The New York Times, joined Cheddar’s Between Bells to talk about the slow but persistent change in television away from overwhelmingly featuring the white, male lead "of a certain age who lives by a code." Hale discussed program developers staying abreast with the current state of the world, shifting which kinds of diverse characters' stories are getting told. “I think there has been a move in recent years away from a kind of cop show or other kind of violent genre show — not that those aren’t still being made, they’re coming out every day — but if you look at what’s getting the attention now, it might be something more like 'The Crown’ or ‘Queen’s Gambit,’ for instance,” he said. #New York
