Getir, grocery app that bought FreshDirect, owes millions of dollars in NYC back rent: lawsuits

The once-mighty grocery app that bought FreshDirect is now a tenant deadbeat that owes millions of dollars, according to a slew of scathing new Manhattan lawsuits.
Turkish-based app Getir has owed nearly $4 million in unpaid rent and lease obligations to landlords at nine locations across the city since as far back as 2022 — and even abandoned some of their storefronts with years left on their pricy leases, the supreme-court suits allege.

The company is designed to have its own stockpile of groceries, which it divvies up between local rented locations and then takes in customer orders through its phone app, relying on e-bike riders for delivery.
One of the Manhattan lawsuits says Getir owes more than $360,000 in back rent, taxes and utilities for its rental space at 114 W, 26th St.. The company has spent nearly a year of skipping out on its bills, the suit claims.
On East 40th Street, Getir also hasn’t paid more than $283,000 in rent and other bills, court filings say.
An East Harlem landlord also said that with back rent and remaining lease obligations, Getir left them high and dry on $1.5 million in owed dough. While that case was recently settled earlier this month, the other eight suits remain on the table.
The leases involve acceleration clauses, which mean that when a commercial tenant defaults on the lease agreement, landlords can basically call for the full lease to be due at once, producing the staggering number.
One case filed Tuesday claims Getir owes $88,000 in unpaid rent at its abandoned West 35th Street retail spot, plus future lease obligations totaling $950,442.
The landlord of the abandoned West 35th Street retail spot says they have already drawn down on Getir’s $101,846 security deposit to make a small dent in the debts, according to court filings.
Getir did not reply to multiple Post requests for comment.
