Astros’ Yordan Alvarez seemingly breaks Tropicana Field scoreboard with BP homer: ‘Not paying that bill’

Yordan Alvarez may owe the folks at Tropicana Field a check.
The Astros slugger appeared to break the scoreboard in right field after hitting it with a long home run ball during batting practice ahead of Houston’s 3-2 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
The ball Alvarez hit initially appeared to only damage the side panels of the outfield digital scoreboard, according to MLB.com , before the center panel began to glitch and all three went dark to start the game.

Fans were told that the scoreboard was having “technical difficulties” by stadium host Nate Kurant.
“You’re trying to get me in trouble,” he said through an interpreter. “You’re the one who posted that picture. There wasn’t a video showing that was me. I don’t know how it was. I’m not paying that bill.”
During his rookie season in 2019, Alvarez struck the massive video board at Minute Maid Park with a ball that traveled an estimated 455 feet and forced the stadium to cut the power to a portion of the scoreboard.

Alvarez owned up to that instance and acknowledged that — at times — during batting practice he aims to put some power behind his swings.
“Sometimes during BP I try to put some intention into some of those swings,” he said.
The Astros play one final game against the Rays on Wednesday at Tropicana Field.
