Vikings signing Stephon Gilmore to one-year deal in late free agency move

Stephon Gilmore’s NFL career will feature a 13th season and a sixth team after the All-Pro cornerback signed a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, according to multiple reports.

Gilmore started all 17 games for the Cowboys last year, and prior to that, he spent one year with the Colts, one year with the Panthers, four with the Patriots and five with the Bills.

He visited with the Vikings on Monday, according to ESPN , and less than a week later, the 33-year-old was reunited with Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores — who coached Gilmore for two years on New England’s defensive staff.

“I’ve had a ton of respect in Stephon Gilmore’s career, playing against him,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters following Gilmore’s visit, according to ESPN. “This is a guy that’s done it at a really high level for a long time.”

Earlier in the offseason, Gilmore said that he was “being patient right now” when searching for his next destination.

Dallas added Gilmore last season through a March trade with the Colts, and Gilmore eventually helped the Cowboys replicate the production of Trevon Diggs following the star’s season-ending ACL injury .

Gilmore finished the 2023 campaign with 13 passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble, and he has collected 31 interceptions and 140 passes defended throughout his career.

“I feel good, Year 13, been playing a long time,” Gilmore said in June, according to MassLive . “So I’m just being patient and waiting for the right opportunity.”

The Vikings needed to add cornerback depth, and earlier in training camp they shook up their depth chart by dealing cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. to the Cowboys in exchange for Nahshon Wright.

But Mekhi Blackmon had already torn his ACL during training camp.

Shaquill Griffin had injured his hamstring, too.

Minnesota also needed to navigate a tragic death in its cornerback room this summer, too, as Khyree Jackson, a fourth-round pick in April’s draft, was killed in a car accident in July .

The Vikings, who have also needed to pivot at quarterback entering the regular season after J.J. McCarthy needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus , will face the Giants in Week 1.
