For just the 13th time in the 105-year history of the NFL, a regular season game is being played on a Friday.
Tonight’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers is also the first Week 1 Friday night game in 50 years.
It’s also the first NFL game to be played in Brazil.

Why is the NFL playing on a Friday?
The NFL doesn’t typically have games scheduled on Fridays; that’s because of the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The act was passed in part to protect the TV rights for high school and college football, which takes local precedence on Friday nights.
Per the act, the NFL cannot hold Friday games from the second weekend of September until after the second weekend in December. Since Labor Day was especially early this year (September 2), this weekend is the first one in September.

Has the NFL played in Brazil before?
No! Today’s game between the Eagles and Packers is the first in NFL history to be played in Brazil and South America as a whole.

This Week 1 matchup between the Eagles and Packers is a tilt between two teams with kickoff weekend history on their side. The Packers have won the most kickoff weekend games in NFL history (59), while Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is one of three active coaches with a perfect Week 1 record (3-0).
