A motorist was killed early Sunday when a wrong-way driver slammed into his car on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County — leaving the victim’s car a raging inferno, cops said.
Westchester County police said they responded to several 911 calls around 5:08 a.m. reporting a car that had been traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the roadway had collided with another vehicle, about half a mile south of King Street in the village fo Rye Brook.
Police rushed to the scene to find one of the cars “fully engulfed in flames.” The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been identified.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was removed from his car and rushed by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where he’s currently being treated, though no information was immediately available about the severity of his injuries.
Patrol officers, the Accident Investigation Team and detectives from WCPD’s General Investigations Unit are still looking into the cause of the crash, the department said in a Facebook post late Sunday morning.
As of noon, traffic was still being diverted off the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway at its Ridge Street exit. One lane of travel on the southbound side of the parkway remains closed due to the ongoing investigation.
WCPD says no additional information about the crash is anticipated to be available until Monday.
This latest tragic crash is one of several fatal wrong-way crashes to hit the New York metro in recent weeks.
Long Island mother Kerri Bedrick, 32, drove the wrong way on the Southern State Parkway around 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 22, causing a four-car pileup that killed her 9-year-old son. Her license had been suspended a whopping 56 times before the deadly crash. She’s being held without bail.
Two days later, two men were killed in Harlem when a pickup truck drove the wrong way on the northbound Henry Hudson near West 154th Street around 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 24, cops said. The passenger was arrested about 30 feet from the scene but the driver fled and is still being sought.
Rye Brook is a small village in Westchester with a population just under 10,000, located around 35 miles north of New York City
