Robert Saleh vows to fix Jets after season-opening disaster

Jets coach Robert Saleh expressed confidence that his team will figure things out, one day after they were beat up by the 49ers, 32-19 , in their opener.
“It’s definitely going to get fixed,” Saleh said Tuesday morning. “I’m not discouraged in any way. Obviously, they executed a hell of a lot better than we did, and we’ll be better for it.”
No one is overreacting around the Jets, but there also were some glaring issues Monday night.
They could not get off the field and the offense ended up watching from the sideline. The Jets only had the ball for a little more than six minutes in the second and third quarters combined.
“I think where the game got away from us is at the end of the first half we give up, I think it was like a six-minute drive that ate up the rest of the first half where they got the field goal,” Saleh said, “and then they came out of the locker room with another seven-minute drive that led to a field goal, so we went from 13-7 to 23-7, and our offense went over an hour without being on the field.”
It was hard to get a read on the offense, which ran only 49 plays.
Aaron Rodgers led an impressive 12-play touchdown drive in the first quarter and had some beautiful throws, but he also had some forced passes and the offense made miscues like a fumble, dropped passes and an interception.
“I know what it looks like,” Saleh said, “but I also know what the film looks like, and I know, just from a process of how the game happened, our offense is going to be really good this year.”
The Jets now head to Tennessee to face an 0-1 Titans team Sunday.
The Jets had a chance to make a statement on Monday against the 49ers, the defending NFC champs, that they had arrived as one of the top teams in the NFL. Instead, they were humbled.
Now, they have three straight games against teams that will be considered inferior — the Titans, Patriots and Broncos.
The Jets need to beat the teams they are supposed to in order to restore confidence that this team can end its 13-year playoff drought.
Saleh admitted he feels better this year at 0-1 than he did a year ago at 1-0 because he believes the team’s issues are correctable.
Last year, he was dealing with the realization that Rodgers was done for the year with an Achilles tear.
“You know what, unfortunately, it does because I know we’re going to get the defense fixed,” Saleh said. “That’s not a problem. … and I know we’re going to get a lot better from Week 1 to Week 2.”
As for Rodgers, he completed 13-of-21 passing for 167 yards and a touchdown with an interception.
Rodgers said he can play better but he made enough throws to make you believe he can still lead the Jets to plenty of wins this year.
“I think our offense is in a really good place,” Saleh said. “I thought it was a good first outing in terms of the quarterback hadn’t played in so long. But there was a lot of encouraging things, and I know it’s going to be a lot better once we balance out this team.”
