Here’s who could replace Edward Caban as next permanent NYPD commissioner after top cop’s resignation

The appointment of veteran lawman Tom Donlon as interim NYPD commissioner still leaves a void atop the nation’s largest police force — and there’s no shortage of contenders for a permanent top cop.

Mayor Eric Adams’ pick of Donlon is expected to be purely short-term, giving him breathing room to find a successor to embattled outgoing Commissioner Edward Caban — and Hizzoner’s third overall full-time commish, sources said.

Rumored candidates for a permanent police commissioner include some of the NYPD’s most prominent names, in addition to other high-profile city officials.

Caban’s resignation comes after federal agents raided his home in connection to a corruption probe.

Sources said Adams could also pick an outsider to the NYPD — as he did when he appointed Donlon as interim commissioner — so he can avoid the whiff of scandal befouling the department under Caban.

    Jeffrey Maddrey

Adams tapped ‘serious player’ Tom Donlon as interim NYPD commish to restore department’s tarnished image: sources

Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey is the NYPD’s top uniformed officer and likely a familiar face for many New Yorkers. He often briefs the public on high-profile crimes and recently obtained his law degree.

But he is no stranger to controversy — an abuse of authority case against him for allegedly interfering with the arrest of an ex-cop was only recently tossed.

    Kaz Daughtry

Deputy Commissioner for Operations Kaz Daughtry — the man behind the controller of department’s drone program and other tech initiatives — recently garnered attention for his role in crackdowns on anti-Israel protesters.

Insiders have long told The Post that Daughtry is integral to police operations, with sources saying in 2023 that he is “literally running” the NYPD .

    Tania Kinsella

Tania Kinsella is a double trailblazer as both the department’s first female deputy commissioner and first black woman to hold the post.

Kinsella has long-standing ties to the current Adams administration, with her mother being longtime friends with Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, sources said.

    Jessica Tisch

Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch was reportedly considered for the police commissioner job that ultimately went to Caban.

She served nearly a decade as the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for information technology, during which she put in place a digital daily log app for cops that replaced their old, tedious handwritten forms. But she also made headlines with the rollout of her $160 million cell phone plan .

    Juanita Holmes

Probation Commissioner Juanita Holmes is a perennial rumored NYPD commissioner contender.

She previously served as chief of patrol but left in 2023 after butting heads with past top cop Keechant Sewell, as well as with Maddrey.

Adams sought to keep Holmes, whom he called “brilliant,” within his administration.

    An ‘outsider’

Sources told The Post that Adams could pick an “outsider,” likely with strong New York City ties but without any direct NYPD connections.

But the likelihood of an outsider pick was unclear after Adams went with Donlon.

Adams could also pick someone who isn’t on insiders’ radar — a maneuver he pulled off in 2022 when he chose Sewell, a veteran Long Island cop, as commissioner.
