The Chiefs will be without their top offseason addition for the foreseeable future.

Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was placed on injured reserve and is set to undergo surgery to repair his dislocated sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder, the team announced on Friday.

Brown, whom the Chiefs signed to a one-year deal worth $7 million this past offseason, suffered the SC joint dislocation after catching a pass after subsequently being tackled on the Chiefs’ first play of their first preseason game, a 26-13 loss to the Jaguars.

He has been out ever since.

The Chiefs had originally opted not to place Brown on injured reserve as they finalized their roster ahead of the regular season, but team trainer Rick Burkholder said Friday that the injury did not heal properly.

“The protocol is you look at that in a week and make sure it’s still in place. It was,” Burkholder said. “He was doing great in rehab, we were talking a return-to-play plan. He had one last check of another image to do at four weeks out from the injury, and it looked like the bone had moved.

“Everybody involved through it was a little too risky for him to play without having this operated on. He’ll have it fixed and we’ll go from there. There’s no timelines because we don’t know [how surgery will go] yet.”

Head coach Andy Reid said on Friday that Brown, 27, will be out for “months.”

“He’s a great kid, boy I tell you, and nobody wanted to do this more than he did,” Reid said. “Our hearts go out to him but he’ll get himself back and ready to go whenever that is. It does take a pretty extended amount of time to take place.”

The Ravens drafted Brown with the No. 25 overall pick in 2019, and he spent his first three seasons in Baltimore.

He enjoyed a career-best season in 2021, recording 91 catches for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns.

That following offseason, the Ravens traded Brown and a third-round pick (No. 100) to the Cardinals for the No. 23 overall pick in the 2022 draft.

And now, his Chiefs tenure will have to wait.

“Disappointed, frustrated, and Sad was the first wave of emotions once I realized I would need surgery but that only lasted a day or so because Of my Faith in God [sic],” Brown posted on X . “knowing that this to shall pass , no matter the great opportunity I had in front of me. It’s not over and that’s not the path God wanted for me and I’m perfectly fine with that now . I feel it’s my duty to let everyone know out there no matter if things are going good or not going the way you want it to, never wary from your faith but to lean and trust into God no matter the situation…With that being said let’s enjoy some great football !! Let’s go Chiefs!! See yall Soon.”
