Howie Rose has narrated some of the most memorable Mets moments for nearly the last three decades, and on Thursday night in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series, he added another call to remember to his reel.

While the game was televised on ESPN, Rose was still on the call on ESPN New York 880 radio when Pete Alonso hit what would be the game-winning blast in the top of the ninth inning and when Francisco Lindor fielded the game-ending double play to send the Mets to the NLDS.

“Swing and a fly ball to right field, pretty well hit,” Rose exclaimed during Alonso’s homer. “[Sal] Frelick back at the wall, he jumps, it’s gone! He did it! He did it! He did it! Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career. Pumps his fist as he rounds second, it’s a three-run homer. He’s given the Mets a 3-2 lead!”

Facing the abyss again, these Mets showed how the improbable has become probable

Rose ended the call: “Pete Alonso keeps this fairytale season going with the fairytale swing of his career.”

The Mets added one final run before the top of the ninth was over when Starling Marte hit an RBI single to drive in Jesse Winker to make it a 4-2 lead, which was the final score.

The lifelong Mets fan then called the final out of the game when Lindor pulled off a double play.

“Out at first! Out at first! Put it in the books!” Rose said as part of his call on the final out .

The victory sets up a showdown with the Phillies in the division series, which marks the first time that the two NL East rivals will face one another in the postseason.

The 2024 season has produced several surprising moments for the Mets, including two of the most memorable wins in franchise history in the same week after Lindor lifted the Mets into the postseason in Game 161 on Monday.
