Yankees give Game 1 ALCS start to Carlos Rodon over Clarke Schmidt after internal debate

Carlos Rodon is getting a chance for a redo in Game 1 of the ALCS.

The Yankees tabbed Rodon as their starter for the series opener against the Guardians on Monday after his ALDS Game 2 start fell apart in the fourth inning .

Aaron Boone indicated Sunday there was some internal debate about whether to start Rodon or Clarke Schmidt for Game 1 — with Gerrit Cole set to start Game 2 — but the Yankees ultimately decided to keep their rotation in order instead of pushing Rodon back to Game 3, which would have had the left-hander pitching on nine days’ rest instead of six.

Schmidt will now go in Game 3, with Luis Gil following in Game 4.

In the ALDS, Rodon came out firing with an electric start against the Royals but then ran out of gas in a four-run fourth inning.

He was fiery while striking out the side in the first inning, leaning into the raucous crowd, but talked Sunday about wanting to manage his emotions better against the Guardians.
