A train operator was killed and at least 20 passengers injured when the train crashed with a tree on the tracks in New Jersey early Monday, according to officials.

The accident unfolded around 6 a.m. in Mansfield Township on the New Jersey River Line Light Rail track near US 130, WPVI-TV reported.

Initial reports from WPVI-TV said a tree fell on the train as it was moving across the tracks, injuring six passengers.

However, later NBC Philadelphia reported up to 20 passengers — nearly half the 45 onboard — suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed on X that the train operator was killed in the crash, which he said happened when “the light rail struck a tree on the tracks.”

“An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident,” the governor said.

Video from Chopper 6 shows a large piece of a tree wedged underneath the front of the train, which has been held on the tracks.

Emergency crews were also on the scene helping those injured in the collision.

New Jersey Transit River Line is suspended in both directions between Roebling and Bordentown, according to NBC Philadelphia.

An investigation is ongoing, officials said.
