Matt Rempe Has To Do ‘A lot Of Things’ To Make Opening Night Roster

Matt Rempe has talked all summer about how he wants to make improvements on his game and become a real impact player for the New York Rangers this upcoming offseason.

As Rempe’s popularity continues to grow, he wants to be able to back it up with his play, which is a very modest thing to say.

Coach Peter Laviolette is enthused by Rempe’s determination to improve.

"His evaluation is probably honest and fair that he's got to continue to work at all aspects of his game, as a lot of young players do," Laviolette said, via NHL.com. "He was a guy that came up and he made so much noise. You say, what is it that he has to do [to make the opening night roster]? Well, there's a lot of things."

The big thing for Rempe going forward is trust.

In the playoffs, Laviolette opted to make the 21-year-old a healthy scratch for multiple games while he did not receive many minutes even when he was in the lineup.

The enforcer has his fighting down, but still needs to prove he can be a reliable offensive and defensive presence, something that is yet to be seen.

If Rempe wants to become a regular in the lineup and earn the trust of Laviolette, he will have to be more than just a fighter and it’s a positive sign he is motivated to build upon his skill sets.
