Rangers' Newest Addition Expected To Fill Barclay Goodrow's Role

The New York Rangers suffered a big loss when they cut ties with Barclay Goodrow, but there is a player who can fill his shoes.

The Rangers signed Sam Carrick to a three-year $3 million contract this summer. While at the surface this looks like a minor signing, it could turn out to be a lot more significant than many people may actually think.

Coach Peter Laviolette has high expectations for Carrick.

"He brings some grit, sandpaper, face-offs, some physicality," Laviolette said via Dan Rosen of NHL.com. "It's tough losing Barclay, but we replaced him with a character person that bangs bodies, will hit and fight for his teammates, chip in some offense and play some good defense."

This past season, the 32-year-old recorded 10 goals, six assists and 16 points in 77 games for the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers.

Carrick’s game goes far beyond just the stats though. He’s a solid two-way player who can be valuable on the penalty kill while being a guy the Rangers could rely on to anchor the fourth line.

It’s clear that Carrick is a team-first kind of person, someone who is not worried about the glitz and glamor, but instead solely focused on winning.

There is a reason why the Rangers signed Carrick for three years. General managers don’t just throw multi-year contracts to anybody, so it speaks volumes that Chris Drury rewarded Carrick with exactly that.

Carrick is someone to watch out for going into the 2024-25 season.
