Rangers' Division Rival Trade For Disgruntled Prospect

New York Rangers’ Metropolitan Division rival the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded for prospect Rutger Mcgroarty.

The Penguins acquired Mcgroarty from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Brayden Yager. Mcgroarty was drafted with the 14th overall pick in 2022 while Yager was selected with the 14th pick in 2023.

Mcgroaty requested a trade from the Jets earlier in the summer, which has led to all of this offseason drama in Winnipeg.

This past season, the 20-year-old forward recorded 16 goals, 36 assists and 52 points in 36 games for the University of Michigan.

Meanwhile, Yager tallied 35 goals, 60 assists and 95 points in 57 games for the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.

This move shouldn’t shake up a whole lot in the Metropolitan Division and have much of an impact on the Rangers for now as the Penguins are just exchanging top prospect for top prospect.

It’s unclear if Mcgroarty will play for the Penguins this season.

Pittsburgh is fresh off a disappointing season where they missed the playoffs, but with veterans including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson still in town, the Penguins are still a threat to make some noise or at least be a thorn in the side of the Rangers.
