Gotham FC and the future of NWSL ownership
Although the 2023 NWSL season is barely two weeks old, Gotham FC will be taking off this weekend and face the Orlando Pride next Saturday. Perhaps it’s time to take a look at a growing and interesting phenomenon surrounding sports team ownership in North America with more and more “celebrity” names joining in the rush to participate in sports with their check books.
The Giants have Put themselves in a Position to Draft the “Best Available Player”
Drafting the “best available player” is a saying that can sometimes trigger fans. I think it is often a misconception that teams should strictly draft for need in the NFL draft. I’ve always believed that doesn’t make sense. Just because you need a tackle per say doesn’t mean that you should draft a tackle when you think there are 10-15 guys better than him at different positions. With that being said, positional need is obviously a part of who you draft. It’s a safe bet the Giants aren’t going to draft a tackle or a Quarterback in the first round. I am far from a draft expert, but what I always want the Giants to do is draft the best available player based on positional need. I think the Giants used free agency to allow themselves to do that.
This Giants’ Roster Need Should Be the “Center” of Attention
It’s April. That means the NFL and its fans turn their attention to the NFL Draft starting April 27th. The Giants currently have the 25th pick in the first round. And while there is much chatter about taking a wide receiver or cornerback with their first pick, you cannot help but think that Round 2 (pick #57) will lead to the Giants drafting the next key 10-year player on the offensive line. They need a Center.
NYCFC picks up critical draw in Foxboro
In most sports, a tie or a draw leaves fans with an uneasy feeling because your team neither won nor lost the game. However, soccer is different in that a draw is a long-term, strategic success because you gain a critical point for each draw – a point that can make or break a season come the fall. Again, you didn’t win and you didn’t lose but match draw points can quickly add up during a lengthy soccer season.
Gotham FC gets “Reign”ed in Home Opener
Home openers in sports are supposed to be magical events designed to hail the beginning of a new season and of course fans want to obviously see the home side come off with a victory. This wasn’t the case for Gotham FC’s home opener this past Saturday night as they dropped a decisive 2-0 loss to the visiting OL Reign. Maybe blame the rain delay or blame anything else you want but Gotham FC is now looking at an even 1-1-0 record and the loss of critical points early in the season.
Devils gearing up for the playoffs
It’s hard to believe that the 2022-23 NHL regular season is in it’s waning days. Soon. Stanley Cup playoff fever will begin its crescendo and guess what – the New Jersey Devils are in the thick and thin of the playoff mix. How will the Devils finish...
Rangers getting a possible taste of the playoffs
The NHL season is in its waning days and the New York Rangers sit comfortably in third place in the Metro Division with a convincing lead over wild card-contenders New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. Things are working out just like the script was written in the pre-season, right? Except the Rangers may have to face their local rivals (and second place team in the Metro Division) the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Bring your A game with you, gents – you will need it.
NYCFC News and Notes
Well, it’s Saturday so what does that mean in the MLS world? It’s Match Day. And NYCFC will have a challenge on their hands this Saturday with a league-leading New England Revolution on tap for this week’s match. Of course, another early season road game means even more challenges for the Boys in Blue but fans can consider this match more of a “character building exercise” for later in the season.
PREVIEW: Gotham FC Take On OL Reign in 2023 Home Opener
With Gotham FC’s home opener this weekend, it’s time to take a look at the match and preview what can be expected. OL Reign is coming into town after a frustrating but close 1-0 loss last weekend and look to be a tough match opponent for Gotham FC – a great early season challenge.
What You Should Know About the Legal Landscape of Online Gambling
Internet gambling has risen in popularity in recent years, and with it comes the need to understand fundamental gambling laws. It’s critical for websites that wish to provide a legal service and gamblers to be aware of the regulations. You must be informed of these specific rules to safeguard...
Watching Andrés Reyes After One Month
New York Red Bulls’ defender Andrés Reyes had an productive March. Scoring the team’s first goal of the season against Minnesota United FC to salvage a draw seemed like a great start. Then last weekend his second half own goal against Charlotte FC left New York with another draw. All combined with his overall performance and it’s been an interesting month.
NYCFC has a big challenge ahead this weekend
The road sometimes can be cruel and NYCFC may soon find out that early season road matches aren’t kind to team standings. This squad sits in the middle of the MLS table right now and certainly won’t gain any breaks this weekend when they face the red-hot New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium for yet another road match. We’re only five games into the season and this big challenge could easily set the tone for the rest of the season for NYCFC.
Gotham FC starts the 2023 season out with a “W”
Last season, Gotham FC finished at the rock bottom of the NWSL with a 4-17-1 record and only 13 total points. The bleakness of the 2022 campaign sat as a backdrop to failure as a club and a franchise in our nation’s largest metropolitan area. Would the 2023 season bring a change of fortune for this side?
NYCFC takes a step back in Houston
Two steps forward, three steps back. You’ve all heard the old saying by now and this saying is so true when you look at NYCFC’s efforts in a listless 1-0 loss this past weekend in Houston. Maybe the warm, humid air down in south Texas isn’t conducive to winning. Maybe playing on the road doesn’t agree with the squad. Whatever the reason/excuse, dropping three points early in the season can come back to haunt you come this fall.
Giants Showing No Love for Saquon?
While the NFL Annual League Meeting continues in Arizona, Giants Co-Owner John Mara and GM Joe Schoen stepped away to meet with the media on Monday for a few minutes. The hot topic was Saquon Barkley. Specifically, will the Giants work a long-term deal with Saquon? Will Saquon participate in OTAs and the offseason program? Is signing Saquon a priority for the Giants? Or, maybe not…
What’s Next For The Giants This Season?
With the 2022 season wrapped up, fans are highly anticipating the playoffs in September. Unfortunately, the previous season didn’t give the best results. The Giants finished off the year with the first .500 finish but couldn’t manage to rebuild the team. The Giants were also hit by injuries, which affected the team.
If the NHL season ended today . . .
If the NHL season ended today, the New York Rangers would of course find themselves in the Stanley Cup playoffs and right now it’s only a matter of which wild card teams will represent the Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively. Nonwithstanding a total collapse in their final games, the Blueshirts sit comfortably in third place in the Metro Division heading into the last week of March.
My Favorite Moment as a Giants fan
The last ten years as a part of the Giants fan base has not been easy for any of us. If we are being honest, the Giants were one of the worst run organizations in the league from the end of Super Bowl 46 until Dave Gettleman’s “resignation”. Whether it be awful drafting, such as Erick Flowers or Deandre Baker, or bad free agency signings, like recently released Kenny Golladay, they really struggled to even build competitive rosters.
How the Giants have Played Free Agency Smart
Every year when free agency comes around. I think the fan in all of us wants our teams to spend big on positions of needs. While that may be fun, we have seen how that doesn’t usually work long term. I think the best thing way to build an NFL team is through the draft, while you supplement through free agency. I think that is exactly what the Giants are trying to do, which may not be flashy, but sure is smart.
Are The Jets Instant Super Bowl Contenders With Aaron Rodgers?
With the Aaron Rodgers trade expected to happen at some point soon, the Jets’ odds to win the Super Bowl next season are now +1400. New York opened at +2500 the day after Super Bowl 57. There is a widespread rendering that the Jets will be a serious Super...
