NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Long Island winery has the best red wine in New York State, according to the results of the 2024 New York Wine Classic released Wednesday.
At the 38th Annual New York Wine Classic, a nationally recognized competition highlighting the best of New York's wine industry, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the winners, naming Raphael Winery in Peconic with the best red wine in New York State.
Raphael Winery, a family owned winery built on four generations of tradition, was given the honor with its 2019 Cabernet Franc Reserve, receiving a 95 rating as its score.
The $60 bottle of wine was crowned among the “Best of Wine” winners at Wednesday’s competition with Long Island wineries such as Harbes Vineyard, Bedell Cellars, Pellegrini, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and Pindar Vineyards taking home awards for their specialty wines.

“New York State is home to a community of world-class winemakers producing high-quality, unique varietals that continue to set them apart as leaders in the industry,” Gov. Hochul said. “The New York Wine Classic celebrates the very best of the state's wine and grape industry, and I am proud to support the innovation, growth, and success of our local farmers and wineries.
Wanda Mann, East Coast editor of “The SOMM Journal” and Founder of “Wine with Wanda” hosted the live virtual event. The New York Wine & Grape Foundation, partnered with the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) to judge the competition with the panel including beverage directors, sommeliers, top bartenders, retail buyers, and educators.
Samuel Filler, executive director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, praised the competition saying this event encapsulates the prosperity of New York wine.
“Each year, wine enthusiasts and industry professionals eagerly anticipate the results of the New York Wine Classic, which serves as a grand celebration of our thriving industry,” Filler said.
