Granville village, township economic agreement delayed, awaiting more application details

The village of Granville and Granville Township will wait to approve a historic economic agreement that would boost development in the Columbus Road corridor.

The Granville Township Trustees held a public hearing Wednesday night on the proposed joint economic development district, or JEDD, between the village and the township, which would increase the area's commercial tax base and shift the tax burden from residents to businesses.

As previously reported, a JEDD is an economic development tool that allows townships to partner with a municipality to collect income tax on commercial properties within a defined area. In this case, Granville Township is partnering with the village, and businesses in the area would be subjected to the village's 1.5% income tax rate. Township residential properties are not affected by the income tax.

But the trustees could not vote on the agreement because the village and township are still waiting for a few more properties owners to submit their applications to join the JEDD — the same issue that prevented village council from voting the week before.

The township has given property owners a deadline of Tuesday to get their applications submitted to the village, ahead of village council's next meeting Wednesday.
