    The week ahead: Juneteenth celebration, Reggae in the Park, pet adoption event

    Mega pet adoption event: June 15 and 16, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Bob Carpenter Center, 631 S. College Ave. Hundreds of wonderful furry companions will be looking for their forever home — big dogs, small dogs, senior pets, puppies, cats and kittens. Choose and meet your potential future family member, then welcome them into your home on the spot. The adoption fee is $35 (credit card only), and all pets are spayed.neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to be adopted.

    Tori’s Critters: June 15, 11 a.m. at Newark Free Library, 750 Library Ave. See and touch crazy animals like lizards, birds, and more while learning about their care and habitat. Open to all ages. For more information, visit newcastlede.gov/333/Newark-Free-Library.

    Reggae in the Park: June 15, noon to 7 p.m., at Glasgow Park, 2275 Pulaski Highway. Free event includes live music, Caribbean food trucks, vendors, face painting and children’s activities. No parking will be available at the park, except for handicapped parking. Attendees should park at Glasgow High School, Fox Run Shopping Center or Reach Church and ride a free shuttle to the park.

    Juneteenth Celebration: June 16, 3 to 4 pm at Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site. Speakers include Kenneth B. Morris, Jr., President and CEO of Douglass Family Projects and a descendant of Frederick Douglass; Crystal Simms, a descendant of the James family; and Calvina Perry, a Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site interpreter. Music will be provided by contemporary singer Nadjah Nicole. The event is free. Registration required at friendsofcoochsbridge.org. Attendees must park at Pencader Heritage Museum, 2029 Sunset Lake Road, and ride a free shuttle to the event.

    Outdoor concert: June 19, 6:30 p.m., at White Clay Creek State Park’s Carpenter Recreation Area, 880 New London Road. Exit 93 will perform as part of the park’s weekly summer concert series. Free, but park fees apply.

    Summer Kick Off Party with Erin Entrada Kelly: June 22 at 11 a.m. at Newark Free Library, 750 Library Ave. Join award winning children’s author Erin Entrada Kelly to celebrate the start of summer and kick off our summer reading challenge.     How to Build a Campfire: June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Newark Free Library, 750 Library Ave. Learn about campfire safety with the 4-H Kindness Matters Club & build a tasty campfire treat. Open to all ages. For more information, visit newcastlede.gov/333/Newark-Free-Library.
