Two people, including a woman from Newark, were robbed at gunpoint in Townsend while trying to sell vape pens to a stranger they met online.

The incident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. July 19, according to Delaware State Police.

The two victims, an 18-year-old woman from Newark and a 19-year-old man from Middletown, drove to a residence in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue, where they had arranged to sell the vape pens.

Two gun-wielding suspects approached on foot, got into the victims' vehicle and demanded the vape pens and money.

The 19-year-old, who was driving, honked the horn, scaring off one of the robbers. The other robber stayed inside the car while the driver attempted to drive away to safety.

In the chaos, the driver veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole and then a house, police said.

After the crash, the driver ran after the robbers, one of whom fired a shot at him before fleeing.

The 18-year-old Newark woman was hospitalized to be treated for injuries she sustained during the crash. No one else was injured.

Police did not release any description of the suspects.
