Demonstrators in Newark demanded justice Sunday after the release of police bodycam footage of a fatal shooting of a Black Illinois woman. Sonya Massey, 36, called 911 on July 6 for help and was fatally shot by an Illinois deputy who responded to her call. The shooting happened moments after she went to her kitchen stove to turn off a pot of boiling water. Then, Deputy Sean Grayson drew his gun and fired three shots, one striking Massey in the face. At a press conference last week, Massey's family claims in the moments after the deadly shooting that law enforcement misled them. Grayson has since been fired by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, which said he "did not act as trained or in accordance with its standards." Demonstrators said Massey needs to be vindicated. Ben Crump, the family's attorney, says that the Department of Justice, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton are pledging their support. A grand jury also indicted Grayson last week on one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct in addition to the three counts of first-degree murder. He entered a not guilty plea and was denied pretrial release. "
