    Newark Airport facing delays as flights affected by Microsoft CrowdStrike Outage

    A global technical system outage has affected flights at Newark Liberty International Airport Friday morning with an average of an hour delay for departures, according to the airport and FlightAware.com .

    An alert issued by the airport said IT outages are affecting operations but did not offer additional details except to contact your airline for flight status. A follow-up message stated: "The [Port Authority of New York and New Jersey] is not affected by the ongoing global outage , but airlines are experiencing delays/cancellations. DO NOT head to EWR unless your flight is confirmed."

    United posted that: "A third-party outage is impacting computer systems, including at United and many other organizations worldwide.

    "As we work to fully restore these systems, some flights are resuming. Many customers traveling today may experience delays."

    Newark Airport has had 38 cancellations over the last 24 hours, per FlightAware.

    CrowdStrike Microsoft outage

    The former head of Britain's National Cyber Security Centre Ciaran Martin told BBC Radio that an update to a product offered by global cyberscurity firm CrowdStrike (CRWD.O), opens new tab appeared to be affecting operating systems based on Microsoft's Windows Operating System.

    Microsoft's MSFT.O cloud unit Azure said it was aware of the issue that impacted virtual machines running Windows OS and the CrowdStrike Falcon agent getting stuck in a "restarting state," amid an ongoing global outage.

    NJ response to global outage

    Gov. Phil Murphy said he was briefed on the outage.

    "We activated our State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) as of 3:00 a.m. in response to these disruptions and have provided guidance to relevant executive branch agencies on how to address the situation," Murphy stated. "We are also engaging county and local governments, 911 call centers, and utilities to assess the impact and offer our assistance."

    Hospital network in NJ affected by outage

    Hospitals at one of New Jersey's largest health care systems are delaying some procedures for patients Friday due to the global software outage that has affected hospitals along with airlines, banks and other industries across the globe.

    Some clinical and patient computer systems at RWJBarnabas hospitals were not working correctly Friday morning due to a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike that is causing Microsoft Windows systems to crash.
