SOUTH ORANGE, MAPLEWOOD and NEWARK – The original Newark is below with details of the fire. Missing in the article is the fact the South Essex Fire Department (SEFD) provided mutual aid to the Newark Fire Department at the noon fire and again in the evening. For the daytime fire, SEFD sent Engine 32 and Ladder Truck E-1, while only one Engine, number 32, was requested for aid that evening. This is an example of the kind of assistance our Fire Company and SORS EMS provide. These fires were on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

The South Orange Rescue Squad (SORS), in spite of the very heavy rainstorm that night, was sent to Newark to provide assistance with rehab and standby at the large fire. They were needed due to the fact that there were multiple injuries, some of the victims were firefighters and EMS personnel.

SORS reports that they brought Supervisor 3-0, with their rehab trailer and Ambulance 3-3 to the scene. The members of SORS on the scene worked together with University Hospital EMS, Newark, NJ, and provided triage and treatment to various personnel at the scene.

There were multiple Newark EMS units at the scene of the fire, causing a backlog of calls for other medical issues. SORS ambulance 3-4 was added to the Newark EMS roster to assist with handling the increased call volume that evening in Newark.

SORS has three ambulances, so here in SOMA ambulance 3-2 was staffed to be certain both South Orange and Maplewood were ready for any call that might come in. They did respond to one call in Maplewood while the rest of the equipment was in in Newark for some 3 hours.

SOMA has a great combination with our SEFD and SORS providing emergency response and exceptional support when necessary.
