Rutgers launches program to help make adults with autism more self-sufficient

Rutgers School of Health Professions recently launched Nexus , a club for young adults with autism where members can learn and socialize with others on the spectrum.

Nexus members also can strengthen their leadership skills, work on their resumes, practice for job interviews, and learn domestic chores such as ironing or cooking.

Nexus uses the school's occupational therapy program space, which includes a kitchen and a living area. The program is intended to help young adults with autism in the Newark area, the school said in a statement.

The new program should be good news for adults on the spectrum who lose access to state-funded services once they turn 21 unless their needs are considered severe, Rutgers Health said in a statement.

Nexus is different from other programs in that it lets members direct activities. Rutgers graduate students and faculty are present to support initiatives.

“If programs exist, they’re often outdated," said Aaron Dallman, Rutgers School of Health Professions professor. "People sit around watching TV or doing crafts with little interaction.

“We have students eager to learn and a community in need," he added. "We thought, ‘Let’s bring them together to solve this problem.' "

Nexus meets weekly over the fall, spring and summer semesters.
