A police pursuit that began in Maryland led to a heavy police presence in Newark on Tuesday evening, but authorities now believe the fleeing suspects have left the area.

The Elkton Police Department was chasing a car with two people inside, and the car headed into Newark, authorities said.

Police here conducted “an extensive search” of the area around Elkton Road and Casho Mill Road, according to Master Cpl. James Marconi, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department. Several day care centers were locked down out of an abundance of caution.

The search turned up empty, and police believe the suspects are no longer in Newark.

“At this time, there is no information that would lead Newark PD to believe the community is in any danger.” Marconi said.

Details about what sparked the police chase were not immediately available.
