Newark Police officers have long carried stuffed animals and other toys in their cars as a way to provide comfort to kids they encounter during difficult situations.

A new program, however, takes that effort to the next level.

The police department partnered with Newark resident Robin Broomall, who is sewing custom teddy bears using old Newark Police Department uniforms.

Each patrol bear is crafted from a single police uniform shirt, according to Sgt. Joseph Conover.

“The shirts are first thoroughly cleaned, then carefully cut and sewn into teddy bears that will be kept in patrol vehicles, ready to be offered to children who may need some solace during potentially scary moments,” Conover said.

The program reduces waste while also strengthening the bond between the community and the police department, he added.

“By giving these uniforms a new life as teddy bears, the initiative is a symbol of care and compassion to children who may be facing frightening circumstances,” Conover said.

Broomall, a longtime community volunteer and Rotary Club member, has been making teddy bears as baby gifts for many years. Two years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine, she and fellow members of the Newark Morning Rotary Club sewed 100 bears to send to an orphanage assisting young refugees from Ukraine.

She got involved in the Newark Police project at the suggestion of Lt. Greg D’Elia.

“When Lt. D’Elia told me about his idea, I was immediately on board,” Broomall said. “I always have a crafty project in progress. This had a real purpose. Besides providing comfort to a little one in a scary situation, the bears can be a lasting reminder that our police are here to help. It’s a simple but positive message.”
