Cortland (NY) FD Receives $50K Grant to Replace Supply Hose
The city of Cortland Fire Department announced recently that it has received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant award of $50,000, the department said in a press release. This award will allow the department to replace all of the supply hoses. This hose is a large diameter hose (LDH) used to bring water from the fire hydrants to the fire apparatus or go directly from apparatus to apparatus. Currently, the city’s water infrastructure places hydrants roughly every 300 feet. However, firefighters will often use more than one hydrant and try to obtain a backup hydrant of a separate water main, leading to longer distances between the apparatus and the hydrant.
Town of Ithaca, property owner look to redevelop iconic Turback’s property
ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – If you ever find yourself longing for the old days of Ithaca, one town official has some potentially good news. Town Supervisor Rod Howe says someone has purchased the gothic revival building at 919 Elmira Road, the former location of the popular Turback’s Restaurant. With help from the town, the owner is pursuing a development grant in hopes of breathing new life into the property and perhaps providing an economic boon to the town and city.

IC grad Musnicki set for fourth gold medal run in Paris
ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – An Ithaca College graduate and two-time gold medalist hopes to go out on top. Class of 2005’s Meghan Musnicki is heading to her fourth and final Olympics in women’s eight rowing. She is one of 21 rowers named to the U.S. Team in April. Musnicki was reportedly done with competition after her last Olympics in Japan until she decided to enter the 2022 Royal Henley Regatta for fun with a friend. The pair won, and her competitive fire was reignited.
Ithaca Sciencenter mourns loss of retired operations director
ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Ithaca’s Sciencenter is mourning the loss of a former leader and dedicated volunteer. In a Facebook post, officials say longtime employee Barbara Thorp has passed away. Thorp worked at the science museum for 14 years from 1992-2006, retiring as Director of Operations. She remained involved after retirement, volunteering over 1000 hours in the Saltonstall Animal Room.
