The Chehalem Cultural Center is going to be a busy place this summer, a fact well supported by the line-up of events scheduled over the next several months.

The highlight of the agenda is the CCC’s annual Summer Concert Series, with three musical groups queued up to perform in the forecourt before the cultural center.

First off is Son de Cuba, a Portland-based band that will perform on June 14. The group, according to a release from the CCC, is a quintet created in August 2015 by musicians from Mexico, the United States and Cuba.

“Since three of the band members are Cubans, we have roots in Latin, African and jazz rhythms,” the release said. “We blend this vast knowledge of different beats together in classic and modern Latin songs, exuding energy, happiness and encouraging you to dance.”

On July 19, saxophonist Eldon T. Jones will delight listeners with his “smooth jazz” numbers.

“Eldon T. Jones moves hearts through his profoundly genuine playing and an infectious groove he honed in Portland before becoming a nationally recognized smooth jazz artist and electrifying festival performer,” the release said.

The Summer Concert Series will wrap up Aug. 9 with a performance by classical guitarist Naeim Rahmani. The Seattle-based musician was born in Iran and immigrated to the United States as a refugee.

“(He) has since made a name for himself as an accomplished performer, both nationally and internationally,” the release said.

Rahmani is expected to perform a section of solo guitar pieces composed by living composers — including Sergio Assad, Carlos Rafael Rivera, Michael Finnissy, Atanas Ourkouzounov and others.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for students and slide-scale pricing is available for anyone experiencing financial hardship. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/summer-concert-series . Wine and snacks will be available for purchase on site.

A plea for video and memorabilia

Meanwhile, the cultural center is seeking the citizenry’s help in gathering historical information on the building it calls home.

“The story of the Chehalem Cultural Center building is made up of the people who gather here and we want your memories to be a part of it,” the release said. “We're seeking video footage of your memories here at the CCC, along with any memorabilia community members are willing to share for a trophy case display celebrating our building's original life as the Central Elementary School.”

Art camps and Teen Studio on tap

The CCC is taking registrations for its Youth Art Camps and Teen Studio sessions at www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/art-camps .

“Spots are filling quickly, so don't hesitate in registering your child for a summer of creative exploration and fun,” the release said.

Latin dance and taco night slated

The cultural center will return its popular Latin Dance & Taco Nights on a monthly basis starting at 7:30 p.m. June 13 for tacos and 8 to 10 p.m. for dancing. Tickets are $15 before the event, $20 at the door. Future dates are July 26, Aug. 29, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

    CCC celebrates Juneteenth

The free event, set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. June 20, will feature talks by Charlene Williams, director of the Oregon Department of Education, Libra Forde of the Women’s Foundation of Oregon, a slam poetry performance by Israel Hammond, a college student panel, a book exchange and more. The event is sponsored by the CCC and other organizations.

    Workshops on tap

The cultural has four art workshops slated for June, starting with Upcycling & Remake Fashion with Stephanie Juanillo. The K-7 workshop is set for 10:30 a.m. to noon June 8 and cost $15.

Next up is Crochet the Day Away! The workshop, led by Laura Davis, is set for 10 a.m. to noon June 12 and is good for ages 5 through adult.

A two-day ceramic workshop, Sculpting Portraits with Mya Cluff, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15-16.
