SOUTH CAROLINA — Clemson University’s fourth Juneteenth ceremony, “A Celebration of Freedom,” took place in the heart of the University this year: The grounds of the Fort Hill National Historic Landmark. The stately white manor, built in 1803, is surrounded by immaculately maintained gardens, hedgerows, lawns and a small forest in the middle of Clemson’s main campus. The property was home to the school’s founder, Thomas Green Clemson, before him, his father-in-law John C. City Council adopts FY 2024-25 budget

Russell Triplett leaves Newberry College after 14 seasons for The Citadel
NEWBERRY — Russell Triplett sent shock waves through the Newberry community on Wednesday evening when he was introduced as the new head baseball coach of The Citadel. The Clemson alumnus and West Columbia native took over the Wolves baseball program in 2011. In just two seasons, he was able to completely turn the program around earned his first winning season in 2013 with a 29-22 overall record. Then, he would put together four straight 30-win seasons from 2014-17. His 2019 and 2023 seasons were his best seasons at the Smith Road Complex.
Two arrested in shooting of SLED K9
PROSPERITY — A Prosperity mother and son have been arrested in connection to a shooting that led to the death of SLED K9 Coba. Deputies with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and SLED were attempting to serve a felony warrant on Gravel Road near Lake Murray in Prosperity for 37-year-old James Robert Peterson, of Harmon’s Quarters Road stemming from a burglary on Blacks Gate East Road on May 24.
Council adopts first reading of FY 2024-25 budget
NEWBERRY — Prior to last week’s City Council meeting, Interim City Manager Ed Driggers highlighted key areas in the proposed budget before Council voted to adopt the budget and levy taxes for the Fiscal Year 2024-25. In general fund revenue, $13,841,175 was proposed. That, Driggers said, is the anticipated revenue of all sources that will come in. Additionally, $14,980,346 will take the receipts of revenue plus the transfer of fund balance of $1,139,171 – $800,000 of that is for the Newberry Arts Center.

Ribbon cutting held for Newberry Filmwerks
NEWBERRY —Newberry Filmwerks was officially welcomed to the community during a ribbon cutting ceremony June 12. Newberry Filmwerks, a Black and veteran-owned business, was founded in 2021 and works with the community by filming content for local artists, including the MTD Arthouse Theater. It’s also the first area business to obtain SBA funding through the Newberry College SBA office, which allowed them to initiate a fast-growing drone photography service.

Juneteenth celebrated in the City of Newberry
Temperatures may have been high, but the energy was even higher at the fourth annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday. The celebration started at Bethlehem Baptist Church where participants marched to Memorial Park for the official kickoff.
