NEWBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — One “Grow This” team is heating up the competition by hosting a farm to table event with local produce.

The West Virginia University (WVU) Family Nutrition Program hosted a Farm to Table event at the Newburg Volunteer Fire Department only featuring food grown in Newburg’s own community garden.

Newburg has been participating in the WVU “Grow This Throwdown” which challenges counties around the state to grow their own produce locally. The winning county gets a $10,000 grant to invest in a community garden. Preston County is hoping to win in order to start a garden in Kingwood.

Kozue Maye, WVU Family Nutrition Program Health Educator in Preston County, explained that every week in the “Grow This Throwdown” residents can attend online gardening classes.

“So we teach them how to combat pest issues, grow organically, how to garden efficiently, all kinds of stuff.”

WVU started its gardening outreach ventures in order to fight food insecurity in the state and develop healthy sources of nutrition. More information on the “Grow This Throwdown” can be found here .
