NEWBURGH, In. (WEHT) – State street construction in Newburgh seems to be impacting local businesses negatively.

Eyewitness News got the chance to speak with several business about the ongoing construction and ask how it has affected them.

Autumn Stevens from Sweet Emotions says, “We have definitely notices a downtick in people coming in. I’ve definitely noticed during my shifts there aren’t as many people I get to talk to, which makes me kind of sad. I love to talk to people, it’s part of the reason why I love my job.” While we love our customers and we’re always thankful for them, we would love to greet new people.”

Sweet Emotions is a store that sells handmade soaps and other various body products. The store sits right in front of the construction.

Stevens adds, “While we love our customers and we’re always thankful for them, we would love to greet new people. It’s made it a little difficult to get new people to come in. Those who do, seem to always enjoy it.”

We’re told construction crews are updating the storm sewer lines.

Tara Tapp, owner of Oak Modern, believes the town could not delay construction any longer.

Both Stevens and Tapp are understanding.

Stevens says, “They are doing their absolute best with everything they have been given.”

Tapp says contractors have done a good job keeping people in the loop, has no complaints with them and believes the crews work well with the businesses.

Documents show the construction is slated to last until August.
