NEWBURGH, Ind. (WEHT) — Amax Athletic Fields are no longer a part of the Town of Newburgh. The town council held a public hearing to discuss it this week. After no one from the community came to speak during the hearing, the town council unanimously voted to de-annex the property and donate it to Warrick County.

“No matter if it is us or Warrick County, the property will only be and forever be a park,” says Andrea Balboni, the town’s facilities manager.

Balboni says the decision does not cost the town or taxpayers a dime. According to the town’s website, Amax Athletic Fields were built on outer Lincoln Avenue in 1981. They have been owned by the town since then, until now.

“Warrick County and Warrick Trails wanted to add trailheads and make improvements. So we decided to de-annex, and Warrick County can maintain the park,” says Balboni.

Balboni says the Warrick County Park’s Board is already working on improvements, such as expanding trailheads and giving residents more places to sit and enjoy the park.

“There are going to be new trailheads and increased parking. They have already finished a ton of work on the picnic overlook shelter area,” Balboni says.

The fields are leased and operated by Newburgh Youth Soccer and Castle Youth Football, which Balboni says will not change. She says the lease will move with the property transfer.
