The University of Maine field hockey team kicks off its 2024 season on August 30 with a three-game road trip, facing preseason #1 Northwestern, UMass, and Indiana. Maine is entering the season after a semifinal loss in the America East and will rely on new recruits and returning players, including standout Poppy Lambert, who is close to breaking the all-time goals record. The Black Bears hope to improve on last year's 8-12 record with a mix of fresh talent and experienced players.

Swormstedt is First Woman to Win Pemaquid Beach Triathlon
A former NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse champion outpaced more than one hundred other competitors to win the Pemaquid Beach Triathlon during pleasant summer weather on Sunday, Aug. 25 in Bristol. Sidney Swormstedt of Laconia, NH became the first female to win the overall race championship. Her blazing time of 1:18:48 beat the closest competitor by more than two minutes. Swormstedt was a member of the 2016 women’s lacrosse team at the University of North Carolina that won the national championship during her freshman season.

Bangor Humane Society encourages owners to microchip pets
BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - No pet owner ever wants to lose their pet. Officials say microchips can provide quick identification when lost pets are found. “Any veterinarian, any rescue organization, any shelter, the first thing they’re going to do when they receive an animal that is a stray is they’re going to scan for that microchip and do as much detective work as they can to reunite that animal with their person. So, a microchip is an invaluable tool that we recommend everyone have,” said Bangor Humane Society’s Director of Development and Communications, Kathryn Ravenscraft.
Jury finds Holden man guilty of driving drunk and striking pedestrian
BANGOR (BDN) -- A jury on Wednesday evening found a Holden man accused of driving drunk and hitting a pedestrian in Brewer guilty on all counts. David Mackenzie, 52, allegedly drank 12 Michelob Ultra beers, at 22 ounces each, in about six hours at High Tide Restaurant and Bar on July 15, 2023. He then drove home, hitting then-87-year-old Ira Williams of Brewer, on Eastern Avenue around 8:39 p.m. The crash left Williams with what police called serious injuries.
