NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A judge has ordered a Newington contractor to pay a $1.75 million fine as part of his penalty for tax evasion.

Anthony Niro, 61, was also sentenced Monday to three years of probation. The judge “noted Niro’s medical condition and family circumstances when imposing the sentence,” according to an announcement from Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Those details were not elaborated on in the announcement.

He is facing additional interest and penalties from the IRS.

Niro co-owned A. Niro Landscape Contractors, Inc. with his wife, Nanette Niro. The Niros, along with a business partner, are accused of conspiring to not pay taxes from 2006 to 2010, according to the announcement. The Niros also left the income off their personal tax returns from 2006 to 2009.

From 2006 to 2010, the Niros failed to report more than $7.8 million in income, meaning that they didn’t pay the IRS $1,451,725. Instead, they said they made only $131,895.

Sen. Bob Menendez convicted of all charges, including accepting bribes paid in cash, gold and a car

Anthony Niro has paid about $1.47 million in restitution so far, and forfeited another $127,300, according to the announcement.

Anthony and Nanette Niro pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in January. Nanette Niro has not yet been sentenced.
