Commission strikes down move to expand hotel and motel zoning
Pompano Beach – A move to add ‘hotel or motel uses to B-2 zoning was voted down last week after several residents spoke vehemently against the change. The vote was a reversal of one taken Sept. 12, when the commission voted 4 to 2 to allow such lodgings in the B-2 category. Additionally, at the Sept. 26 commission meeting, the commission directed Principal Planner Danial Keester-O’Mills to advise them where they can put hotels in B-2 (Community Business District) or B-3 (General Business District) zoning.
Planners have special evening in store for State of the City address
Deerfield Beach – History will be made here when proceeds from the annual State of the City event will be donated to the Deerfield Beach Historical Society in recognition of its 50th year. Property owners will see slight tax increase; commissioner wants city hall open five days a week
Wilton Manors – Property owners in WIlton Manors will see a slight increase in their property taxes despite an adoption of an operating budget by city commissioners with an ad valorem millage rate the same rate as last year, 5.826 mills. Overall millage, including the debt service, will be 67.0289.
Housing program takes a couple off the streets
Pompano Beach – At one point, Ollie Singletary and Rosie Ward were sleeping in their truck for six days in one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods. The elderly couple had just left their apartment, located across the street from the Collier City convenience store where Dayvon Johnson and Delana James were killed Feb. 26 in a drive-by shooting, because their landlord raised their rent from $1,500 to $3,000 a month, even though there was an overflowing bathroom and rat problem (they would sit on the couch and smell rat urine).
New parks director taking on a “diverse” job
Deerfield Beach – Greg Warner likes a challenge. That’s why he competes in a seven day, 560-mile cycling competition in his old hometown in upstate New York. And it’s why he took the job here as director of parks and recreation. “I liked the diverse nature of the position,” he said this week. And what he means by that is oversight of not only the city’s parks, recreational centers and programs, but the beach, fishing pier, cemeteries, a heavy special event schedule and landscaping of all city-owned property.
Marine science lab and bigger shuttle on tap for Deerfield Island Park
Deerfield Beach – It will likely be next summer before Deerfield Island Park reopens to the public. The 53-acre Intracoastal Waterway park has been closed for the last six months, but preparations are now underway to make major improvements which include a lab and nature center, and a new ADA-complaint shuttle to transport visitors to the island from Sullivan Park.
Pompano promises double the drone shows for Veterans Day
Pompano Beach – Last year’s inaugural drone show boasted one performance. This year, city officials are promising two. The Drone Show Extravaganza returns Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) at the Fisher Family Pier, 222 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a DJ and live concert by The Vam Band, a Funk tribute dance band that performs Pop, Top 40, R&B, and Soul.
At last budget hearing, residents ask for relief
