I think the Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board is missing a great opportunity to make Pompano a “must see” town. With all the apartments going up, the building designs could require a Caribbean/Key West motif. Seems they did that to Publix on East Atlantic and the corner bank at Atlantic and Federal then dropped the idea.
Call it a homecoming for Broward’s new school chief
Pompano Beach – Rewind the calendar back to decades past when a young boy named Peter Licata was one of many youngsters at Pompano Beach’s McNab Elementary School. Chances are at the time he never envisioned years later he’d be the head of his old school as well as the rest of the public schools in Broward County.
Public will be heard on issue of who can dine at The Hillsboro Resort
Hillsboro Beach – Commissioners have delayed until September a decision on the Hillsboro Beach Resort’s request to open its dining room to the public. Currently, under an agreement signed in 2021, only hotel guests and residents who are “members” can dine there. The vote taken earlier...
HerStory: A history of Florida’s big blows

The season for the North Atlantic occurs June through November, with September...
Pompano Beach bingo hall is a boon to local charities
Pompano Beach – Bingo seems to run in Gale Fontaine’s blood. Fontaine and husband, John, have owned Bingo at Four Corners in Pompano Beach for 28 years. Gale, a Philadelphia native, says there were bingo halls aplenty in her hometown. And unlike South Florida, parents could bring their children with them when they played. “In Philly, everyone played bingo all the time,” she said. “There were no limitations on bingo there. I went with my mom.”
Chiefy unveils his new snare, just in time for mini-season
If Florida lobsters had a Ten Most Wanted list, scuba diver Jim “Chiefy” Mathie would be listed No. 1. Mathie, a New Pelican columnist, not only wrote the book on catching Florida’s favorite crustacean, he has now – after teaming up with a local dive gear firm – designed and developed the Chiefy Snare, a tool to help you catch them.
